English literacy is competence or knowledge of English through language learning. According to MCAEL's 2015 Needs Assessment, there are 130,000 adults in the county who identify as limited in their English abilities (LEP)(2014 American Community Survey data). MCAEL is serving just over 13,000 adults each year, just over 10% of those in need. Thus we have work to do. For a myriad of reasons some of our newest community members lack the English skills they want and need for their jobs and families.
The success of a community rests on the ability of its members to be able to connect, share ideas, and address challenges together. To do this, its members must be able to communicate in a common language. ESOL instruction (English for Speakers of Other Languages) has a positive impact on the whole community. English literacy is a core skill for adults to achieve their goals and to clearly steer their families onto a pathway to success.
